About Us

Powerhouse Programs is the creation of Stephen Halsall and Andy Roy. Both Stephen and Andy have been heavily involved in working with men and boys through well-respected national community development organisations. Their lives and relationships have become richer for these endeavours and they take great joy in sharing this with others.

In doing this work in the community it became very clear to them that there was significantly more they could to do to bring this powerful work into the lives of a larger proportion of our society.

Stephen and Andy met in 2003 where as chance would have it, they both attended their first men-only weekend in the Gold Coast Hinterland. From that fateful encounter they have become close friends and work colleagues through facilitating programs like Common Ground (a 9-week life skills course for men program), week-long contemporary Rite-of-Passages for men and boys, on various organising committees for Men’s Gatherings and executive committees. In 2009, they jointly developed a Men’s Rite of Passage program which was gifted to Mens Wellbeing Association.

Mens Wellbeing is a not-for-profit community organisation which offers programs such as Common Ground, men’s gatherings and resources in order to develop the wellbeing of men to foster healthy relationships, families and communities. We are proud to be partners in actively supporting each others’ activities (www.menswellbeing.org).

Andy Roy

Andy is married to Caitlin and they have 2 daughters and 4 sons from ages 9 to 22. At 49 he is happily nestled in the crucible of mid-life. He is a senior Common Ground Facilitator and Trainer with the Men’s Wellbeing Association, and has supported over 30 Rite of Passage camps throughout Australia as a Program Manager and Lead Facilitator. Caitlin and Andy have been married for 22 years and have been self employed throughout this time. Amongst many exploits, in 1999 they have designed and implemented a 6,000 tree sustainable forestry plantation in the Noosa Hinterland which has been a great success with the trees now with much girth and towering overhead. Their latest efforts are in developing the Oxley Nursery into a thriving business while supporting their children through adolescence and young adulthood. Their 3rd son is due to attend his own Journey to Manhood rite of passage in 2015.

Stephen Halsall

Stephen is married to Ina and early in 2012 they welcomed their first child, Dominic. At 37, after an eventful, successful and challenging ten-year career in finance, Stephen has completed his Honours degree in Psychology at University of Queensland in 2014, receiving a Deans Commendation for his final thesis. He plans to continue his psychological training through study and practise. He is also a Common Ground Facilitator and Trainer with the Men’s Wellbeing Association. Stephen is an asset to camps in his work with teenage boys in particular, having served on over 20 Rites of Passage camps throughout Australia. In 2010-2011, he was involved in the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) through QUT. Since 2009, he has mentored a 7 yr old (now 13) indigenous boy, under the Volunteer Mentor Support Program in Inala, Brisbane. He is proud to say of the mentor-mentee relationship developed over the last 5 years, that it is one of the best things he has ever done for someone else and himself! Stephen would say that he has been preparing to be a Father for over 10 years and is loving it! Stephen currently delivers monthly Dads Breakfasts in Brisbane for past attendees of programs, quarterly weekend Building Bridges programs and provides mentoring to young men and professional Dads.

Matt Cuttler

Matt is married to Sehame and they have 4 children between them. He was raised on a family farm in Queensland and holds well to old fashioned country values of helping out others and being honest and up-front. Matt has had two distinct halves to his life which ‘shifted gears’ with a truck crash that almost claimed his life. His second chance at life has brought him to a place of great desire to ‘give back’ as he puts it, and this has lead him to many endeavours including facilitating various programs for men and boys. He is also now on the preferred speakers list for BT Financial and Westpac. He brings with him a great passion for life and a unique flare in speaking with others.

The Powerhouse Team

Our team is constantly evolving and growing. We have a number of men and women that have vast knowledge and experience in rites of passage programs, facilitation and many have diverse professional backgrounds. Along with this, our growing number of young men alumni from programs are invited back to support the delivery of programs and provide a fine example of the young men that we’d like our teenage boys to develop into. Some of our team have even completed their own rite of passage as teenagers and are now facilitating on our programs.

Returning young men and fathers have the opportunity to return onto the program and develop their personal awareness, emotional intelligence and develop greater understanding of the father-son dynamic. The benefits of working as a part of a team in this process are felt not only by the individual, but by their family and professional colleagues.

developing boys into men

We have received positive interest from people and communities asking to be mentored in how to develop their own rites of passage and how to bring our programs to their region. Please contact us if you and your community wish to discuss this and how we may support your vision. A professional colleague of ours, Doctor Arne provides Rites of Passage Leadership Training and ongoing training and program mentoring can be provided by us. Please contact us to arrange a chat of how this can work for you.
